[upturned stuffy nose] umm ackcyually, I thought of the Joker before Luke for Mark Hamill
I forgot which TED talk had this quote, but somebody said "if you keep doing the same thing, you become a poor cover band parody of yourself." Same way sitcom characters get flanderized and get stale. Some other actors that were able to escape the viral typecast were Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson by doing something drastically different.
Easier said than done though. Radcliffe and Pattinson had the success to continue on and do whatever they wanted without major financial repercussions. I'm the king of a very small hill in a very dead end job while I wait for the company to go under. At the same time, things aren't looking great in the tech industry right now, so I just have my head in the sand. I'll find whatever that next thing is... eventually.
Ohhhh, Radcliffe and Pattinson are also good examples of successful career pivots, but I imagine they also had the patience and financial runway to do it their way. I think about that gap a lot: the desire for something different and actually having the means to make something (maybe multiple somethings) happen.
I recently made a similar move and I'm scared. I felt stuck at a dead-end job and just let the contract end while I applied to new jobs. Moving and looking forward.
The first thing I want to say to you after reading this is: thank you.
Somehow, your message today came to me at exactly the right moment. That crucial moment where I realized I went from loving my work and brand to feeling trapped in it and hating everything I make. I've felt so lost and confused and *afraid* above all, the past few months.
It's always scary to abandon something that works, isn't it? But I think it would be a disservice to us as human beings if we continued to trap ourselves for the sake of keeping up the status quo.
So, I'm cheering you on. I know you can do what you set out to do. Maybe I can, too.

Hey, Stephanie,
The first thing I want to say to you after reading this is: thank you.

Cheers.
Thanks for sharing, Mimi
It IS scary, though ironically, from what I've seen and experienced, avoiding that fear is also what ends up costing us the most. Cheering you on too!
